How to Test for Authenticity

Is it Tortoise Shell or
Plastic?
The Test:
Remove a tiny piece of the material from an inconspicuous area. Using tweezers, hold the piece over a match. If the resulting smoke smells like burning hair, you've got the real tortoise shell. If it smells like burning plastic, you don't.
Is it Silk or Mercerized Cotton? The Test:
Burn a few strands of the material. If it smells like hair, it's authentic. If it smells like burning vegetable, it's cotton. (If you need to, burn a small piece of a cotton shirt to become familiar with the smell of burning vegetable.)
Is it Lacquer or Plastic? The Test:
Heat a straight pin with a match until it is nearly red hot, then stick the pin into the object in an inconspicuous spot. The pin will go in, but if there's a tree smell (lacquer is a resin, which comes from tree sap), it's authentic. If the pin goes in and there's a plastic smell, it's not.
Is it Ivory or Simulated Ivory? The Test:
Heat a straight pin with a match until it is nearly red hot, then stick the pin into the object in an inconspicuous spot. If the pin doesn't go in, and if there's a slight hair smell, it's probably ivory. If the pin does go in and there's a plastic smell, it's plastic.

"There is nothing education cannot do.
Nothing is above its reach.
It can turn bad morals to good;
 it can destroy bad principles and recreate good ones;
it can lift men to angelship."
